Action Requests
2012 National Days of Action for Sudan sponsored by Act for Sudan A series of National Days of Action events April 22-29, 2012 is being planned to commemorate Genocide Awareness Month. Events will be unique and locally designed - but all National Days of Action events will be connected together through the collective messages sent to one girl: Guisma. Guisma, an 8-year-old Darfuri girl, is living in a refugee camp in Chad. Her story is at once solely her own yet shared by hundreds of thousands fleeing the genocidal Khartoum regime in numerous regions of Sudan. “Letters to Guisma” is a nation-wide community art project featuring a silhouette of Guisma’s face printed on a postcard, to be filled in with the thoughts, prayers and well-wishes for Guisma, her family and community. The postcards will be sent to Guisma care of President Obama. Guisma’s story calls attention to the ongoing crises in Darfur, South Kordofan, Blue Nile, Abyei, and Eastern Sudan, will spur activism and ensure Sudan is put on the front burner. To join the National Days of Action: 1. Check out the resources at National Days of Action. There are event ideas if you don't have anything planned yet, and resources/opportunities for you to integrate Letters to Guisma into your already planned event. 2. Search for an event near you and/or register your event (any time in April!): . Search events 3. Let KTJ know how many postcards you’ll need for your event, as well as any other resources you may need. Everything is also available for free download at National Days of Action. The Letters to Guisma team will help you with any type of event. Developed by KTJ, on behalf of the 2012 National Days of Action for Sudan.
ACT FOR SUDAN - THEY CAN'T WAIT
February 5, 2012 Tell the Obama Administration that waiting is not an option for the people of Sudan as their government masses its armed forces to attack Sudanese civilians and blocks humanitarian aid. Recent satellite imagery shows that the government of Sudan is massing its armed forces in preparation for a full-scale military assault on the Nuba people in South Kordofan. Hundreds of thousands of civilians are at imminent risk with evacuation routes blocked by Sudan’s army. This grave threat is compounded by the government of Sudan’s continuous blockade of humanitarian assistance since June 5, 2011. US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice recently stated, “If there is not a substantial new inflow of aid by March” the situation in Southern Kordofan will be “one step short of full- scale famine.” With another major attack imminent, the Obama Administration must lead and take action, unilateral if needed, to save lives immediately. Time has run out for dialogue and negotiations with Omar al Bashir’s genocidal regime in Sudan that, for decades, has killed while it talks. The innocent civilians in Sudan can’t wait any longer. Click here to automatically send your personalized fax to senior Administration officials with responsibility for Sudan policy, asking the United States to urgently take necessary steps to save lives and avoid complicity in genocide. Already took this action? Share it by tweeting this: THEY CAN’T WAIT. Tell @WhiteHouse @StateDept that innocent civilians in #Sudan need immediate protection and aid. http://bit.ly/xthjLt
Help Change US Policy Toward Sudan SAAF Action Item 1-2012 January 19, 2012 Through the campaigning for the Republican Presidential nomination and the campaigns by both major parties prior to the election which will follow in November, we have an opportunity to try to both raise awareness of the situation in Sudan and Southern Sudan and perhaps even help shape U.S. policy on Sudan. One way to do this is to get questions in front of the candidates. Depending on the circumstances, questions may need to be expanded or slightly altered, but the essence is as follows: 1. What is your position regarding Sudan's recently announced military partnership with Iran? 2. The U.S. intervened in Libya to protect innocent civilians. What is your plan to end the continuing oppression and war crimes being committed in Sudan against its own citizens? 3. Do you support regime change in Sudan? (If "no", why not?) Please attend Candidate Meetings, participate in call-in shows and try to raise these questions. Follow-up should include more probing questions and comments. Finally, please let us know when you have been successful in raising the questions and what responses you receive. Reply to Bill Andress
